IS THE HUMAN RACE ON A JOURNEY THAT INCLUDES ITS EXTINCTION?

Is heaven not on earth?

hoffman-portraitDr Donald Hoffman, Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of California, says some research suggests “… the physical world isn’t final reality”.

He says such research also suggests “Natural selection drives our perceptions to extinction.”¹

Amen! (to borrow a phrase …).

This is precisely what my mystical experiences of Reality suggest. It’s what has been alluded to often in the nearly 100 posts to this blog.

The human race is on a long journey that includes its extinction. This is its destiny, its fulfillment. Heaven is not on earth. That’s the mystic message.

MYSTIFIED AND SCEPTICAL ABOUT MYSTICAL EXPERIENCES OF REALITY?

The wonderment and disbelief of the uninvited

Reader “GG” wrote to us as follows:

“Those of us who dwell on the outside of your perplexing alter ego and who were casually introduced to it, as was I, are, rather, somewhat mystified and, I might add, skeptical.

“We do not doubt your revelations or refute the existence of this world, although, judging from our previous discussions, that noun may not apply: it is an essence, I gather, rather than a place. And we outsiders who are mere listeners about this phenomenon can only — as some say in the vernacular — give our head a shake.

“Perhaps this can be a launching pad for your weekly missive: the wonderment and disbelief of the curious but uninvited.”

Mysticalexperiences.net’s answer:

Charles T. Tart PhD’s., book, The End of Materialism: How Evidence of the Paranormal is Bringing Science and Spirit Together is a summation of his 50 years of research on consciousness, altered states of consciousness (ASCs) and parapsychology. He is one of the founders of the field of Transpersonal (spiritual) Psychology.

Dr Tart’s’ and other scientists’ work convinced him “there is a real and vitally important sense in which we are spiritual beings, but the too dominant, scientistic, materialist philosophy of our times, masquerading as genuine science, dogmatically denies any possible reality to the spiritual. This hurts people, it pressures them to reject vital aspects of their being.”

The long list of eminent authors and scientists who write to support Dr Tart’s work is a testimony to science’s growing acceptance and resolve to discover what experiences of phenomena like MER mean in general and to the human condition in particular.

These testimonials and the full text of Dr Tart’s relaxed, very readable introduction to his book can be found on his website.

MYSTICS AS INTERMEDIARIES?*

An excerpt from the Conclusion to the book, PATHS BEYOND EGO, by Dr. Roger Walsh and Dr. Frances Vaughan:

“Carl Jung spoke of the importance of gnostic intermediaries, those people who transmit a wisdom tradition by imbibing it themselves and then translating it into the language and concepts of another culture.

“Perhaps the transpersonal movement can function as a collective gnostic intermediary, whereby the timeless wisdom of traditional transpersonal disciplines can be translated. tested, and winnowed, and then can inspire and transform contemporary culture.

“Yet the transpersonal movement is more than a gnostic intermediary. For in addition to translating knowledge it is actively involved in creating knowledge. New techniques are being devised, data generated, and both ancient and contemporary claims are being tested scientifically, philosophically, clinically, and experientially.

“The long-term effects of this enterprise may be far more than we can imagine. Already we have seen a shift to a more generous view of human nature and possibilities.

“We have moved from a perspective that encompassed only a single, healthy waking state of consciousness to a recognition of multiple states; from viewing normal development as our ceiling to seeing it as a culturally determined limit; from denying lucid dreaming to exploring it in the laboratory; from regarding meditation as a regressive escape to appreciating it as a developmental catalyst; from dismissing mystical experiences as pathological to recognizing them as beneficial; and from devaluing non-Western psychologies and philosophies to appreciating that some of them are, in their own unique ways, highly sophisticated.

“These shifts and more may make transpersonal studies an essential cornerstone in the emerging paradigm. These shifts also may change each of us, for what we do reflects our beliefs about who and what we are.

“The transpersonal vision of our possibilities may therefore call forth our individual and collective efforts to actualize them. This actualization may be crucial for the survival of our planet and our species …”

*COMMENT: If my experiences of these “transpersonal” psychological experiences of Reality (MER) are anything to go by, there were no indications they were meant to make me an intermediary to the human race.

Any direction I got regarding humans was to avoid them as a distraction, counterindicative to an understanding of the existence of the greater Reality being revealed.

IS REALITY WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT?

People who are called to think about their existence want to be authentic. It is a pressing thirst and hunger.

There’s a deep instinct to be whatever it is we’re meant to be despite the clutter of expectations coming at us from all levels.

Those not called to think about such things remain what the wise ones to this day call “sleepwalkers”.  They await their turn.

So those who for some reason not yet known to mankind are not sleepwalkers, the perennial question is,

“Are our lives best left to Reality? Is it the daily promptings in our lives of Reality that are meant to keep us focused on authenticity by ridding us of our human irrelevancies and distractions?”

Is it the experience of Reality that gives us the discernment to avoid the repetitive pains of human history –  so that we can develop individually in peace and contentment – eventually shucking off the human experience to become what we really are?

Is the locus of every person’s true identity, their true existence, not after all in sleep walking through life automatically, indiscriminately adopting the world’s values by default?

Is there anything of lasting value to be found in studying humanity after all?

Even scientists are now suggesting science is not able to answer the perennial questions of existence. Professor Michio Kaku suggests humanity is only at a level of “Type ‘O’  civilisation”. (See hundreds of “Closer to Truth” probing video interviews with leading scholars, academics, scientists, philosophers and psychologists).

So, is humanity merely a carrier? Are humans just transients, passing through, evolving? Is this what mystics experience? Is Spirit winning over Matter?

Is only Reality forever, always true, totally dependent, steadfast? Is anything else as awake, as authentic? Is Reality what it’s all about?

WHAT WAKES UP?

By Davidya.ca

When we’re speaking of spiritual awakening, it’s key to understand that it’s not a concept or something you can figure out with the mind. Such stories can obscure the reality because they create constructs in the mind that are not it. What reference points do we have when it’s not something that’s ever arisen, even in thousands of past lives?

Awakening is not an experience, it’s a change in being. It’s a shift in our reference point. A change in who we know ourselves to be.

As such, it is not the person that wakes up. In fact, we can be said to wake up From the person.

If we don’t understand this point, it can lead us to call many things “awakening” that are really just another experience. There are all sorts of experiences we might call spiritual that can be really nice, even life-changing.

But Self Realization? That’s a very different animal from any experience. It is a change in the thing that is experiencing, the experiencer itself.

The first key is that awakening is permanent. It does not come and go, even through sleep. It is a change in what we recognize ourselves as being. A change that means shifting from being a me to being cosmic – limitless, unchanging being.

But even there, there are distinctions to be made. We can have experiences of being cosmic that use memory to feel like it’s ongoing.

We can shift into the detached witness or observer (experiencer) that can bring many of the qualities of awakening. But it has to be more than awakeness for true liberation.

We can have an actual awakening but fall back into dominant mind for a time while the shift gets processed. I talked about some of these variations here.

What wakes up to what then?

You may have noticed that I used the word “being” a lot. The key shift I’m pointing to is that change in being, the I Am sense. With a true awakening, it is our very being, our very existence that wakes up to its own deeper nature.

Awakening is not I becoming aware that I Am. Rather, we shift from that possessive I-thought (my thoughts, my emotions, my body) to being boundless awareness observing those things.

We can say awareness wakes up to itself here. In other words, it has not just noticed itself (I have my consciousness, I Am) but cosmic or universal being has woken up to itself here.

It then progressively awakens in more and more layers of being leading to refined perception, Unity, and then to its nature beyond being in Brahman.

Funny thing though – however many ways I put this, it will never be understood by the mind because the mind is not what wakes up. But I continue to write these articles because they help make clear what it’s not. And they bring clarity to those who have actually woken up. And because sometimes, the right wording at the right time can be the catalyst that triggers the shift.

DO HUMANS NEED TO GET OVER THEMSELVES?

rebeccaAmerican Dr. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, scholar, popular, critically acclaimed real science ‘fusion’ novelist, graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College, receiving the Montague Prize for Excellence in Philosophy. She immediately went on to graduate work at Princeton University, receiving her Ph.D. in philosophy. (Photo: humanism.org.uk)

Dr Goldstein is quoted as suggesting, (in Goldstein, 2013,  Makeltultra.wordpress.com) that, “The impermanent nature of existence” might be a probable cause for people having something like the mystical experience of Reality (MER).

Comment:

I would be flattered at the thought that when I started having my experiences of Reality at the age of 15 years I was even aware of the existence of “the impermanent nature of existence” or any human need to deny it.

My experiences never suggested my human self had anything to do with the experiences of Reality I was being given.

On the contrary, my experiences suggest the human condition is an involuntary evolutionary phase on the way to a non human existence.

IS MYSTICEXPERIENCES.NET MANIPULATIVE?

Q: Is this web page manipulative?

A: What makes you think that?

Q: Sometimes the page frustrates with explanations and ideas, answers that
are interesting but don’t address the point.

A: Most questioners really want agreement with their own conclusions.

Do they have the spiritual experience to see the whole picture?

Any answer to such wrong questions would be unhelpful if not downright misleading.

Also, many questions are not spiritual.

They’re based on human experience, needs, wants, attachments, morality and ethics, logic and reason, all veils between the human condition and spiritual Reality.

Many questions are from people who simply want to be better people, (according to the passing standards of the day). That’s not what Reality is about. That would be a spiritual digression …

The best way is to get people to experience the answer, at which point the question is irrelevant.

Q: Can you do that, get people to experience spiritual answers?

A: Not in my experience, no. But you can get them to the point where it might happen.

My own experiences were spontaneous. There used to be claims such experiences could be humanly induced. You don’t hear much about such claims nowadays.

Q: Then how do you answer questions?

A: I leave out a lot of what humans expect in an answer. I am provocative without explanation. The provocation of raised but unanswered questions can focus sincere Seekers’ thinking and contemplation.

I concentrate on the Reality aspect of the question too, not the human …

These unanswered enigmas make the questioner think a great deal more widely and deeply about spirituality and Reality.

This method can be fraught though. Many people just aren’t used to prolonged thinking, certainly not of the contemplative or meditational variety.

Others really prefer to accept what they’ve been told and learned from childhood.

So this method deliberately seeks to eliminate the merely curious, the social seekers, the spiritually negative, the uncalled, to sort the sheep from the goats.

Experience of Reality only comes to those who are ready for it, whether they seek it or not.

The real Seekers, what the Christian bible calls “the Blessed” who hunger and thirst after righteousness, are the ones who respond immediately, who are “caught, not taught”. They lighten my existence, humble and uplift me.

So, if raising what has been called “Cosmic Consciousness” by sharing the experience of Reality with deliberately provocative simplicity is manipulation, then yes – beware, this web page is manipulative.

A LEADING WORLD PHILOSOPHER’S PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF REALITY

hick_200x272John Hick (1922—2012)

John Hick was arguably one of the most important and influential philosophers of religion of the second half of the twentieth century.

“As a British philosopher in the anglo-analytic tradition, Hick did groundbreaking work in religious epistemology, philosophical theology, and religious pluralism.” ~ Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Hick, a prolific author of best-selling books still read at universities around the world, said he had, “… experience of a transcendental reality of some kind.”

It was “a brief but very, very vivid, unforgettable experience of transcendent meditating”.

The experience was “oneness”; “benign”, “friendly”, “wonderful”. He thought the experience was “meaning”, that the experience “is meaning.” He was against the idea of a personal God.

DEEPAK CHOPRA’S REALITY

“In everyday life, you get to experience the miracle of transformation that causes a three-dimensional spatial world and one-dimensional temporal world to manifest before your very eyes.

“The great advantage of experience is that it isn’t theoretical. Reality is never wrong, and all of us are embedded in reality, no matter what model we apply to explain it.

“Reality is waiting for us to creep closer to understanding its mysteries.

“In the meantime, it won’t falter or come to an end. Reality will remain our home, our source, and the ground state of our being far beyond the lifetime of the foreseeable universe.”

INDIA AND SPIRITUAL REALITY – “Only Reality is constant, real and lasting.”

I didn’t answer your other questions so now here are my belated answers:

Q:  The author states that the spiritual lethargy and poverty of India reflects centuries of meditation. The yogi goes inward to still the mind and his goal is to attain bliss and joy and become one with GOD, unaware that union with God is not possible.

A:  The whole point of existence and meditation is personal realisation of oneness with Reality. This leads to surrender and spiritual discrimination, a different attitude to poverty versus material “richness”, for instance

So far as the assertion that union with “God” is not possible is concerned, I have experienced Reality many times and know Reality is far bigger than “God” or gods or human ambitions and goals and that union with it is all life is about.

Despite what we generally see, hear and feel as humans, not all here is what it seems. Reality is winning. All is well.

By the way, the aforementioned fruits of oneness like bliss and joy are just two of many gifts of the Experience. They’re spiritual gifts, not ephemeral worldly objects of human want.

Q:  Then the author continues: It is within the destiny of Soul however, to become a Co-worker with God and enter into the true realm of heaven.

A:  No.

Is this pure, mistaken human ego and ignorance? There is no evidence, experiential or experimental, for such an assertion.

Reality doesn’t need humans. It draws us to Itself. It can’t be commanded, invoked, evangelised or proselytised, in my experience. It is caught, not taught or thought.

Q:  Do you think there is any truth to his belief that the present state of India has been effected by meditation versus contemplation?

A:  The author’s declaration of the “present state of India” sounds as if the author is referring to India’s worldy, non spiritual, contemporary state we know from the news. The wordly state has nothing to do with spirituality.

Individual Indians however are in evolutionary spiritual transition, like us, and their experience of Reality is ancient and has made them fatalistic, surrendering to mankind’s unstoppable spiritual evolution into Reality.

(They tend to “let go and let god whereas we try to use “God” as a magic spell to deliver our wordly wants).

Indian culture has traditionally been unimpressed by the western world’s realities, while western culture has become more and more materialistic.

All earthly anchored cultures are dying,  dead ends.

Only Reality is constant, real and lasting.

Mankind as such may or may not survive the transition into Reality but it doesn’t matter. There is more than being merely human.

Reality is in charge. All is well, as your meditation will reveal if you persist, (or if Reality doesn’t get you first …).

MEDITATION VERSUS CONTEMPLATION?

Q:  What is the difference between contemplation and meditation?

A:   Contemplation and meditation are about the inner work towards personal realisation of Reality.

I can’t answer from experience because my realisation of Reality was different. It didn’t come from special focus/concentration, contemplation or meditation. It was spontaneous.

I remember knowing at about five years of age that my destiny was to find my soul and return it to what I then called “God”.

Ten years later I was called by what I call MER (the Mystical Experience of Reality) to experience Reality for the first of many times, every year, until I was in my late thirties.

So focus, contemplation and meditation were not my path to Reality. Contemplation was a tool subsequently used to inspect Reality and human life.

Meditation, surrendering, never worked if I invoked it. It came as a fruit of my constant rededication to the  joyousness of Reality’s love, guidance, defence, encouragement and unending presence.

It’s been an effortless process, though not without its frustrations and futile attempts to take my destiny into my own hands now and again …

Being involved in humanity is not easy for a mystic.

(However, I’m much encouraged that leading scientists are more and more aware of the fundamental centrality of the mystic experience in humanity’s evolution).

Today, constant promptings continue to play a big part in the perennial inner work against lust, anger, greed, attachments and ego, the veils between humans and  Reality.

SEEKER?  As for you, it seems you’re called, you’re a Seeker.

That which you seek seeks you, so you might as well give in, because Reality doesn’t.

My recommendation would be for you to consider practising complete surrender, one bit at a time. That’ll mean a lot of sitting quietly, waiting, listening, resisting thoughts as they arise, staying blank, avoiding distractions. This is the inner work. It’s constant. It’s what you’re all about. Ultimately, nothing can separate you from your destiny, your joy and acceptance in Reality. You’ll never want to be just human ever again.

Follow this way and you’ll be taken through all the focus, contemplation and meditation you need …

I hope this is helpful.

CONSCIOUSNESS – The Scientist, Religionist and Mystic Views

“Scientists say our consciousness is the product of our brains, with purposes set by evolutionary fitness.

“Theologians believe our consciousness reflects the God who created it, with majestic purpose of eternal life.

“Mystics hold my consciousness is a drop in the ocean of cosmic consciousness, with cycles and return.

“For sure, consciousness is a test case.”

SEARCH OR DESPAIR?

“The search is what everyone would undertake if he were not stuck in the everydayness of his own life. To be aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair.”

ARE YOU A SEEKER? Have you a choice?

The spiritual life is a calling. You cannot decide you will have a spiritual life because you think it’s probably a good idea, because you want to be a better human being, or because you’re curious.

Though certainly you will become a better human being – automatically, axiomatically, if you have in fact through no fault or goodness or even qualifications as yet not known to mankind,  become a Seeker.

Not to worry if you’ve not got to that stage. There are no failures, no one is left behind. You are as precious as the first even though you may think you are the last. In fact there are no first or lasts. All is well, and in good order.

The true Seeker however will eventually know that what he or she thought they sought, seeks them.

The whole idea was put in your mind. It was not your idea. If you are a Seeker, you are ready whether you know it or like it or not. You are accepted,  much loved, much nurtured, and protected on levels of understanding no man, woman can transfer to you, but which will be revealed to you personally. You are being readied. All is well; then, now and for ever.

Note: There are citations for all these assertions. You’re very welcome to present them. But I thought you would prefer to hear my personal experience at this early stage, not just acquired, second hand, regurgitated references anyone can access.
