EMERGENT SPIRITUAL PROPERTIES “Not Invented by Human Beings”?

Some scientists wrong?

Dr Deepak Chopra has identified what it is like to be spiritual in his new book The Book of Secrets as follows:

Clarity of awareness
Knowingness
Reverence for life
Absence of violence
Fearlessness
Nonattachment
Wholeness

Dr Chopra says, “True transformation, in my view, depends on the emergence of these properties as your personal experience. They are primal qualities embedded in awareness; they weren’t invented by human beings …”

Dr Chopra is expressing one of the profoundest spiritual discoveries of MER (Mystic Experiences of Reality), that the experiences are from OUTSIDE all human experience – are beyond anything humans can invent.

MER is from Ultimate Reality, of which humans are as yet just an insignificant part, despite some scientists who insist all mystical experiences are human creations.

TIBETAN MASTER PATRUL RINPOCHE OUTLINES THREE UNIQUE PATHS TO ENLIGHTENMENT

By: Lama Lhakpa Yeshe, Tricycle.org

The great Tibetan lama Patrul Rinpoche was a widely revered and much-respected teacher, and people gathered around him to receive his wisdom and insight. His teachings were simple, direct, and profound, and in one way or another the essence of his discourse always led to the practice of compassion.

One day he said to a small group of his students: “The purpose of life is to help all sentient beings to be free from suffering. In order to do this, you need to cultivate unconditional, unlimited, and pure compassion toward all, without any exception.”

Patrul Rinpoche always encouraged discussion, debate, and dialogue, so after making this all-encompassing statement, he asked, “Do you understand?”

HOW SPIRITUALITY FOUND ME

By: Dr. Tara Cuskley

I’ve contemplated writing about my spiritual awakening experience for a while now, but it has never quite felt like the right time. Words aren’t always adequate to capture an experience that’s both deeply personal and is best understood as a felt, embodied sense rather than something that can be described and analyzed. But I am going to try my best because it feels important to begin sharing how my own path has included twists and turns for those who may have had their own interesting, unexplainable experiences…

IS THIS BLOG COMING TO ITS NATURAL END?

This Blog is coming near to its end I think. It seems to have fulfilled its primary purposes.

I started it because I wanted to clarify and understand my experiences of what I call, The Mystical Experience of Reality. I wanted to research and write about others’ experiences of the phenomenon.

It’s done all that and a lot more I hadn’t expected.

In fact, I had no idea that what I thought was my personal spiritual “condition” was so universal and had spiralled into such an important place in physics, theology, and philosophy.

The condition of MER, is now internationally, historically widespread, known, and studied in depth. So much so I’m almost at the stage of NOT putting the 100 or so posts from the Blog, all the comments and contact material, into an edited, coherent narrative like a book.

Oxford University entrusted its thousands of case histories on the phenomenon to Wales University. The archive there has grown to over 6,000 cases. They have sent me a questionnaire to add my experiences. There doesn’t seem any immediate need to do anything more. It’s not as if MER, or what Christians might call the Holy Spirit, can be evangelised. The experience is caught, not taught.

The physicists seem to have come to the conclusion their approaches by ‘experiment’ are never going to match the scientifically unreachable ‘experience’ of the mystics. It does, after all, seems to come and go like the wind, to and from where and for what certain purpose nobody knows …

I’m still getting some encouragement to produce the book, enlarged with added material, detailed commentary and references, but I remain unconvinced. As my wife says, “The Blog says it all for those who’re interested.”

I’ve also concluded the ego is now the only thing that would compel me to organise and write the Blog into a book. Thankfully, my ego seemed to have lost that part of ego years ago, when my MERs began.

And anyway, most importantly, the human race has not been abandoned. It is in good hands with or without such a book. All is well.

So I’ll not let the idea of a book bother me for now. I’ll just never say never …

KH. Nanaimo. February 2017.

MY SPIRITUALITY, EXPERIENCE AND DESTINY

“As for the human race, it is being taken care of better than it can take care of itself. All is well.”

Q: The ancient Vedantic scripts that attempt to explain human existence say there are two approaches, philosophical, and experiential. Which are you?

A: Through no effort on my part, or any qualification I’m aware of, I’ve been given many annual experiences of what I call Reality. I think that puts me in the experiential camp.

Consequently, to me, the word Reality means everything that exists, everything known and unknown, then, now and forever – the utter joy of being, the oneness with all, the dissolving gratitude, humility of being wholly accepted (love), and knowledge – the “veils” removed.

However, though I have experienced this Reality I can’t claim to understand it – rather like someone who can drive a car without having to understand how it works.

Q: So where does philosophy come in?

A. Philosophy is a means by which mankind attempts to use the mind to make known facts meaningful. (Some scientists are saying that without actual experience of Reality Reality cannot be known).

My Experience is that what is known as “enlightenment”, “transcendence”, is spontaneous, is caught not taught. The mind, that the philosophers are using to study Reality in the absence of actual experience of Reality, is an illusion that produces nothing lasting, and is impermanent. Mind shares longevity and death with humans. Mind, with its machinations and ego, is mischief, (but temporary).

Q: So, what is the future of humans? Can we know?

A: Some Sufi schools teach that by the time the Spirit of Reality has brought humans to full maturity, then only Reality, which can be said to be spirit and truth, will still exist. The human race will have dissolved into Reality.
Humans won’t exist. The process is inexorable.

Q: So where do you come in? Do your Experiences give you a mission? Are you a spiritual messenger, a teacher, a guru, or a master?

A: No, I’m none of these things. I do still wonder what I’m supposed to do with my Experiences. I’ve given it serious thought, meditation and experiential study, but have felt not a tremor of personal destiny that I recognise. I’ve wondered if I’m trying hard enough but am somewhat comforted by the spiritual tradition of some Experiencers like me who choose to stay and help the human race understand their destination as spiritual beings. Others, like me, choose to ignore this as a distraction. I am called to go on in the Experience of Reality.

Humans aren’t the be-all and end-all of Reality. There are more important things.

I’m also comforted by the only clear and direct message I got 55 years ago on one of my Experiences on a bridge over the River Thames one evening. The message was: All Is Well. It was clear, strong, persistent and unequivocal. It resonates with me still.

I took that message as a specific reassurance. At the time, the Experiences were ruining my human life. After that, and slowly through the years, I began to think my destiny was to accept the part of me that is human – my responsibilities as a husband and father, earning a living, at the same time as the more important inner work of being what humans call a “mystic” – someone who has Experienced Reality and is caught in an awareness of the process. I can and am to do both.

So to answer your question again, no, I don’t feel any urge to be any more involved with the human race than necessary to my inner work in Reality. I know Reality and am that first and foremost.

As for the human race, it is being taken care of better than it can take care of itself. All is well.

IS REALITY WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT?

People who are called to think about their existence want to be authentic. It is a pressing thirst and hunger.

There’s a deep instinct to be whatever it is we’re meant to be despite the clutter of expectations coming at us from all levels.

Those not called to think about such things remain what the wise ones to this day call “sleepwalkers”.  They await their turn.

So those who for some reason not yet known to mankind are not sleepwalkers, the perennial question is,

“Are our lives best left to Reality? Is it the daily promptings in our lives of Reality that are meant to keep us focused on authenticity by ridding us of our human irrelevancies and distractions?”

Is it the experience of Reality that gives us the discernment to avoid the repetitive pains of human history –  so that we can develop individually in peace and contentment – eventually shucking off the human experience to become what we really are?

Is the locus of every person’s true identity, their true existence, not after all in sleep walking through life automatically, indiscriminately adopting the world’s values by default?

Is there anything of lasting value to be found in studying humanity after all?

Even scientists are now suggesting science is not able to answer the perennial questions of existence. Professor Michio Kaku suggests humanity is only at a level of “Type ‘O’  civilisation”. (See hundreds of “Closer to Truth” probing video interviews with leading scholars, academics, scientists, philosophers and psychologists).

So, is humanity merely a carrier? Are humans just transients, passing through, evolving? Is this what mystics experience? Is Spirit winning over Matter?

Is only Reality forever, always true, totally dependent, steadfast? Is anything else as awake, as authentic? Is Reality what it’s all about?

DO HUMANS NEED TO GET OVER THEMSELVES?

rebeccaAmerican Dr. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, scholar, popular, critically acclaimed real science ‘fusion’ novelist, graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College, receiving the Montague Prize for Excellence in Philosophy. She immediately went on to graduate work at Princeton University, receiving her Ph.D. in philosophy. (Photo: humanism.org.uk)

Dr Goldstein is quoted as suggesting, (in Goldstein, 2013,  Makeltultra.wordpress.com) that, “The impermanent nature of existence” might be a probable cause for people having something like the mystical experience of Reality (MER).

Comment:

I would be flattered at the thought that when I started having my experiences of Reality at the age of 15 years I was even aware of the existence of “the impermanent nature of existence” or any human need to deny it.

My experiences never suggested my human self had anything to do with the experiences of Reality I was being given.

On the contrary, my experiences suggest the human condition is an involuntary evolutionary phase on the way to a non human existence.

“EXPERIENCE”.

EXPERIENCE is, for me, the highest authority. The touchstone of validity is my own experience. No other person’s ideas, and none of my own ideas, are as authoritative as my experience. It is to experience that I must return again and again, to discover a closer approximation to truth as it is in the process of becoming in me.” – Carl Rogers, “On becoming a Person”.

Dr. Carl R. Rogers, psychologist. January 08, 1902 – February 04, 1987. http://www.mythosandlogos.com/Rogers.html

“Pure logical thinking cannot yield us any knowledge of the empirical world; all knowledge of reality starts from experience and ends in it.”

Albert Einstein.

IS THE MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE OF REALITY A “Spiritual Crisis” OR “Evolutionary Emergence”?

“Spiritual crisis (also called “spiritual emergency”) is a form of identity crisis where an individual experiences drastic changes to their meaning system (i.e., their unique purposes, goals, values, attitude and beliefs, identity, and focus) typically because of a spontaneous spiritual experience”.WIKIPEDIA.

Some psychologists regard MER as a personal experience of “spiritual emergency” as if its a symptom of distress, an anomaly.

Psychology could very well have continued as the enemy of human development had it been left to the way psychology was going.

So it is good to see that a new version of younger scientists are accepting MER as a vital sign, even as an evolutionary “emergence”.

Drs Jefferey Martin, Nicki Crowley, John Hick and Marsha Sinetar, are just four names that come to mind immediately, (though Dr. Hick’s outlook was younger than his age).

Einstein said: “Pure logical thinking cannot yield us any knowledge of the empirical world; all knowledge of reality starts from experience and ends in it.”

Foundations, universities and scientists around the world from many scientific fields are joining in the quest to understand MER, (mystical experience of reality) as a powerful seminal force of cosmic reality.

“The Christian of the future will either be a mystic, that is somebody who has experienced something, or be nothing at all”. Karl Rahner, S.J., was a German Jesuit priest and theologian who, alongside Henri de Lubac, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Yves Congar, is considered one of the most influential Catholic theologians of the 20th century: Wikipedia.

Is this “emergence” – rather than personal, human “emergency”? Is the Cosmos not abandoning us to our relatively insignificant human condition? Is the existence of mystics a sign of hope for mankind?

“Spiritual emergence can be seen as a natural process of human development in which an individual moves beyond normal feelings and desires of the personal ego into the transpersonal realms of increasing relatedness to a Higher Power, or God. It is an acclimatisation to more subtle levels of consciousness.” “Psychosis or Spiritual Emergence?” Dr. Nick Crowley, Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK.

Wikipedia’s idea of spiritual is limited to the human spirit, not the real, pure spirit of MER. There is no comparison.

MER, which is what this web page is all about, is not interested in the “spirit” of humans any more than it is interested in the “spirit” of beetles in relation to the vastness of Reality in which all consciousness exists.

There is no “emergency” in the pure Mystical Experience of Reality. MER is filled with an absorbing benign joy and fulfillment, awe and wonder that explains everything, everything known and unknown, then now and forever. It is the purest experience of joy, humility, and acceptance (love) humans will ever know. When it happens, you will know you are all of that.

Humanity could very well die out once done with, but in my experience as a mystic, I know that the existence that MER is revealing will go on forever, with or without us.

EMERGENCE

By Barbara Shaw, BA., (UCLA); Cert.Goethe Institut, Munich; BA, Georgetown University.

That we should be descended from all that life
to bring in the air, to rise inside, to fill our lungs
with love for all that long time, with that very
spirit and breath,

that we should live thus, in bodies
come from all that, and breathe in this gray day
damp as earth and sane as rain, that life might abide

a wee keening, as if the fact of life come down
sifted and sounding through the ages lost
were in the end the only real proof some gods
chose some laws.

But no, if left to chance what then
and not even this day to sip lightly
with every countless breath, what then?
what then?

no eyes to seek the moon, nor miss it.

MYSTICAL EXPERIENCES ARE NOT “NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES”?

“Without eyes and ears, the free flying soul is as dark and silent as the mind of a person who has gone blind and deaf. ”  – JAN STENGREN, Physicist.

Are “Near Death Experiences” anything to do with the mystical experiences of reality that are the subject of this Blog? I’ve never thought so.

Now a letter in The July/August issue, 2015, of ATLANTIC MONTHLY by Jan Stengren, who has a Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Lund in Sweden, seems to explain why.

NDE’s are usually about bright lights, human like figures sending you back to the world because you’re not ready yet, about sounds, and colours. None of those appeared in any of my experiences. Now Mr Stengren offers a scientific suggestion as to why this may be so:

He writes, “Assuming for the sake of argument that the soul or mind actually does leave the body and floats high above, as NDErs claim, how does it see and hear?” He says there are no “sounds” in the real world for the soul to pick up, there are only sound waves. It is our ears that turn sound waves into sounds.

Neither is there any imagery or colour, he says. The lens in the eye focuses light and creates an image, and the cone cells in the retina turn colourless wave lengths of light into colours.

“Without eyes and ears, the free flying soul is as dark and silent as the mind of a person who has gone blind and deaf. The only imagery would be memories from the past, real or fantasised – the stuff dreams are made of.”
