The 5,000 year old Hermetica is said to have had a broad influence on humanity to this day. It has influenced religions, science, academia, history and philosophy, including notables like Plato, Pythagoras, Jesus, and Isaac Newton.
It presents a rich tapestry of spiritual concepts.
I asked Gemini AI for a summary of the key spiritual points found within its texts:
- The Oneness of God (or “The All”): A central theme is the belief in a single, supreme divine being, often referred to as “The All.” This concept emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things within the cosmos.
My experiences were of a Reality that is a non human, non biological, fast growing consciousness of everlasting cosmic energy.
- Cosmic Consciousness and Divinization: Hermeticism stresses the potential for humans to achieve a state of cosmic consciousness and even divinization through spiritual practices and knowledge. This involves understanding the relationship between the human soul, the cosmos, and God.
My experiences were spontaneous. Therefore my understanding is that the revelations of Reality are only given to chosen individuals by Reality Itself.
- Spiritual Rebirth: The Hermetica emphasizes the importance of spiritual rebirth or regeneration. This process involves purifying the soul from material desires and ignorance to attain a higher state of being.
The real non human, higher state of being, only comes exclusively, automatically, as a gift of the personal mystical experience of Reality (MER), in my experience.
- Gnosis (Spiritual Knowledge): Gnosis, or spiritual knowledge, is considered essential for spiritual enlightenment. This knowledge is not merely intellectual but a deep, intuitive understanding of the divine.
MER is not an intellectual experience. It is not even human.
- The Relationship Between the Cosmos and Humanity: Hermetic texts explore the intricate relationship between the cosmos and humanity, emphasizing that humans are microcosms of the macrocosm.
- Emphasis on the Mind (Nous): The concept of Nous, or mind, is very important. It is viewed as a divine faculty within humans that allows for spiritual understanding and connection to the divine.
My realisation is that the massive variety of evil, painful cruelties perpetrated on humans throughout history to this day are products of the human mind.
- Spiritual practices: The Hermetica also points to the importance of spiritual practices, which could include meditations, and contemplations, that would lead to spiritual enlightenment.
What evidence do we have this idea has ever been true? In essence, the Hermetica offers a path of spiritual transformation through the pursuit of divine knowledge and the purification of the soul.
Only 20 per cent of the human race is called to the knowledge of Reality of all existence by Reality Itself through MER, if the Pareto Principle is correct.
I then asked Gemini if Hermetica’s conclusions were based on MER:
- The question of whether the Hermetica stems from direct, first-hand spiritual enlightenment is complex and has been debated by scholars for centuries. Here’s a breakdown of the key considerations:
- Syncretic Origins: The Hermetica arose in Hellenistic Egypt, a melting pot of Greek and Egyptian cultures. This context suggests that the texts are likely a synthesis of various philosophical and religious ideas, rather than the product of a single, isolated spiritual experience.
- The figure of Hermes Trismegistus himself, (A mythical figure said to have produced the Hermetica) is a syncretic blend of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. This fusion indicates a merging of spiritual traditions.
- Philosophical and Mystical Influences: The Hermetica draws upon elements of Platonic philosophy, Gnosticism, and Egyptian mysticism. This indicates a rich tapestry of intellectual and spiritual influences.
- While the texts emphasize gnosis (spiritual knowledge), this knowledge is presented as something attainable through contemplation, study, and divine revelation, rather than necessarily a single, spontaneous enlightenment.
That is not my personal experience!
- The Nature of Gnosis: Within Hermeticism, gnosis is understood as a transformative understanding of the divine, a deep inner knowing. It is plausible that those who contributed to the Hermetica had profound mystical experiences that shaped their understanding.
- It is difficult to verify the level of personal spiritual experience that the authors of the Hermetica had.
- Historical Context: The Hermetic texts were produced over a period of several centuries, suggesting that they represent the accumulated wisdom of a spiritual tradition, rather than the work of a single individual.
In conclusion, while the Hermetica undoubtedly expresses profound spiritual insights, it is more accurate to view it as a product of a rich confluence of philosophical and religious traditions, possibly informed by the spiritual experiences of those who contributed to it.
Such similar ideas in so many ancient religions and philosophies. I imagine they all represent a yearning for meaning and explanation. And a yearning for some overarching purpose to the inevitably difficult and challenging circumstances of human life. I’m not sure these days we should ascribe any particular truth or value to any of these texts, wherever they originated, especially the supernatural elements. I still find much value in some of the broader and less metaphysical texts, especially those which seem to be more in line with modern science. But again, as the Buddhist are at such pains to point out, one is only going to find satisfactory answers (answers satisfactory to oneself) through personal experience. And even then one is on dangerous ground in insisting that one’s own answers represent an unassailable universal truth. In the absence of proof, perhaps it is best to keep a very open mind. And continue with ones own practices, wherever they may lead. My primary goal is serenity, rather than truth – and in that I seem to be doing rather well!

I feel the mystical experience of cosmic reality is latent in all, woken without warning in those with or without apparent qualification. I’m also given to believe there are no failures ultimately.

I have a general awareness of the Hermetica as in that of passing conversation. But I have an intimate awareness of the All (oneness) as it was given to me during contemplative mediation and confirming synchronicities followed. I have nothing but certainty that it is divine truth. I’m aware of the Kyballion as it was introduced as a confirming synchronicity but I have not delved into it. It may seem odd but I stay isolated from spiritual doctrines unless led there because it is the only way for me to know that divine information is channeled and not retrieved from a latent memory.
100% yes to this that you wrote: My realisation is that the massive variety of evil, painful cruelties perpetrated on humans throughout history to this day are products of the human mind.
I believe everything we experience is a reality we have created by thoughts, good and bad.

Well said. My approach exactly. If I do examine books relative to mysticism I find myself looking for validations rather than enlightenment. Yet I don’t need validation now in this day and age and what enlightenment I had came spontaneously anyway!
