“IF YOU DON’T MIND IT DOESN’T MATTER.” Mark Twain

So what matters?

For mystics that’s ridiculously easy to answer.  What matters is in two compartments.

The first compartment is human, where you have responsibilities and duties as a son or daughter, brother or sister, a husband, father, friend, neighbour, colleague and citizen.

Much of this involves dealing with lust, anger, greed, attachments and ego, yours and others.

Most off them disappear with age. You  certainly don’t take them with you at death!

Each of these are worthy of your separate, contemplative attention as priorities in your secret, non-human life.

The second is your true self as a secret, non-human life, a spiritual being separate from your human self, a self detached temporarily from the Reality that creates all things.

You eventually return to this Reality.

All of this leads to the unshakeable realisation that nothing much about being human is made to last so far as the requirements of Reality (eternity) is  concerned … so mind what we mind, eh?

All Is Well.

  1. The problem of course is putting up with the ghastly absurdity of human life while you are struggling here on a planet full of “lust, anger, greed, attachments and ego”. You can work as hard as you like in ridding yourself of the seven deadly sins but it is very difficult to escape the effect of other people intent on living a life of lust and greed and vanity to the very fullest degree.

I have every sympathy with those who go “off grid”. The life of a Stylite is probably the only option. But I don’t image there is much peace to be had atop a column in Syria these days!

  2. I have always found solace in being marooned here by remembering we are “in the world but not of it.”

To the degree we can manage that, we can live without the consequences of our human existence.

Anyway, Anthony, being human is only temporary … We are much more than that.

    As ever,

    Keith.
